What have you learnt?
During the course I have learn some technical skills. Which is kind of useful for some of my project. In a sense of doing a work I had learned how to learn from my mistake. Know what you doing, accept what you did wrong and know how to forgive our ownself. Not to stick with the problem too long.
What have you improve upon?
Before the course I am a person who don’t like to write about myself. Lots of the task in the course always about self reflection. It’s kind of cringe to do. It's the only thing in the course I find it hard to do it every single day. The consistency makes me feel more organised about life. As a go with the flow person I have learned how to be more organized. How to do the plan the things neatly.
What have you excellent at?
I’ve been strongly passionate about designing thing digitally. It’s easy to fix and finish it faster than design physically. I learn lots making skills. I learned how to do things outside of the computer in the course. Before that I had never use sewing machine, knit machine in my whole life. I only know how to do hand stitches which I am not so good at. Practice not always make perfect. At least it's make something. So I think had been improve my hand skills. I feel I work faster than before.
What do you hope to achieve at the end of the project?
I really hope this roller coaster course makes my life better. If you could stay on this course you can do anything. Remember the hard time in foundation. Even if it getting worse I hope I’m doing fine on what throwing at me in the future.

I'm quite happy with the effect it gives me. Unfortunately, the one I squeeze the lime into it doesn't show much colour may be the ratio between the blue peas and the water is too much. I do like to try the colour with another type of eco-friendly material.

3d Manipulating fabric workshop
The workshop was so helpful not for only just my project. It's good for me to know these kinds of stuff before the Ba. I would love to carry on with the ruffles. other wise the fabric i brought with doesnt give the same effect with tutor samples.

I actually come up with using a Berry family to be one of my natural dyes. At the moment I look around the shelves the fruit price compare with the vegetables. It's a huge gap different. A packet of Cherry is 4.20 pound but the beetroot is only 79p per one box. There's a better to save the cost and I think using the Cherry probably had more work to do. Like take out the seed and it will be better to eat it instead. Work with the stuff I don't like having it would be less guilt.

This time look better than I expect it to be. The beetroot literally giving a good colour but it smells so weird, like the smell when you sitting in the forest and you play the ground. It's a well present name "Beetroot" and it smells like a roots.
Denim in a red cabbage

I decided to create a shape of a bubble on a fabric. I have an idea of cut it like a hole. Then I feel it gonna look better If I make it 3d like it stood out for people to look at these pieces. I work on Beetroot dye. After I finish the first dye I am kind of disappointed with the uneven tone of it. but I chose to carry on working with it but when It turns into a sample I drape it in front of my Deconstruct object. I like the way how it flows on the mannequin. The uneven shade kind of elevate it to look ombre. I also like the back of the sample which I am kind of going to work on with the texture of the samples

According from my project, I want to try to work with the food As I have an idea from Denim project, but I don't a chance to because of the time sufficient. I use the found expired food in my flat. I use the expired toast to be a material for today. I think about my childhood when my mum pack a toast for me in the morning with a plastic bag. so I plan to make a bag for a toast to make it look like a puff jacket.
I use the sewing machine to stitch, but it seems to be the machine is too harsh with the plastic. That's why the plastic keep tearing up. I change the process into staple it down. It does work, but It looks too simple for me.
I do like the one I stitch across the toast; I do think it would look better with a different colour thread and different tone colour of the toast.
Red Cabbage print
11/03/2020
The results was not I expected it to be. It's might be because the Cabbage has a very thin layer and the surface is not smooth. That's the reason It not showing up that much effect.
I think we might need to change some sort of materials. The one I am thinking of is Chinese leave, the root part has a thicker layer than a red cabbage.
Also, I think the print on their own might be boring if it sits on their own. What I can think of right now is evaluated it on photoshop.

fabric through the light
A multi placement purpose textiles. I think this set out textiles work where I want it to be. It's playful when standing in the light. It giving a vibe of going to the gig, The light, a movement on the human body through this piece. The lighting would work well with this transparent texture.

The ideas of this project start with my comfort zone. what is comfort me? I come up with the Ideas of Places, what you see and what you can hear.
Places(home); everybody needs places to return which is home. I research my home country, which is Laos, demonstrate how people live, how we dress, how simple we live our lives.
What you hear(music); My fave artist has to give their fans the best through their song. Some of their music save someone life.
What you see(cover); I think about what if I have a chance to design for my fave artist on their album cover, use the lyrics of the song to create the cover. My project would be about me designing the album cover for my favourites artist based on where my home is.

I start to draw the texture of my mood broad to get a line and structure which I had plan to develop it further on Photoshop.
Example of the swatch

After I finish the swatch I set up my work on the wall in my room. I thought I would leave textiles alone. In the end, I find a glue to put it together by using a projector to project the new digital texture to a hand made textiles.

Food as Comfort:
Have you written first hand about how this affects you? Where have you sourced other primary research? Natural Dyes
Have you started sampling?
Have you interviewed others about what comfort means to them? What do others do to gain comfort? What are you hoping to learn from this project?
food packaging- real food but decoposition
natural dyes and colours from foods
research- practitioners and how they use food- andy goldworthy
further manipulation of samples beyond the staining of fabrics-
might want to look at dying your own yarns and wools which you could then use to further embellish your samples
where are you going to get the shapes for the dying from? - how are you going to translate these colours as they will not be as vivid as synthetic box dyes
eco-friendly dyed/ acid/ natural based colours --can start dying on fabric
practitioners who used leaves, tea bags, and food
a work made of coffee and mayo would be a great reference to visualise your work in a clean and nice way
Staining with food dyes and going back in with details is an interesting idea

Red Cabbage vs Blue Peas
I boiled the red cabbage with water for ten minutes. Red cabbage extract is an easy one to work with more than the butterfly blue peas when you have to squeeze it with the water. It does give us a similar colour. The good thing to use the red cabbage is the price is a huge difference from the blue peas. It's cheaper, be able to give us more quantity than blue peas does . One thing red cabbage could do is give us a nice purple-ish colour but the blue peas could be blue on its own and turning purple or red when we drop acid into it.

I decided to do the tied dye again because the previous one was not really giving me the effect that I want. I figure out why it turns to be like that it might be because I dipped it into the water instead of dropping the colour in each part not to make the fabric absorb too much dye.

I like to try the dye on a different fabric. I don't understand why I put a Denim in a Blue-ish dye colour. It obviously not going to show the colour. It is not showing the colour. I might try the denim in a beetroot dye next time. maybe use a different colour on the dye. It might give me a new texture on the fabric.

It's not working!!!
From my research reflect on how often I dye my hair. I have an idea of using some material from it. I punch the hole on the box and attach it together. I spray on it. Honestly, I don't know what I am doing. The idea of using the scrap from the stuff you like doing is good but It has to be another way to make it look better.
I would consider doing it again by separate each single piece and colour it in various material and use a darker colour string to attach so it stood out and look good on their own.
The ruffles made from the natural dye, It looks better when I first finished it. It might be because it have too many wrinkles. I pleated quite a lot when I making it. So it's kind of overwhelmed look at it.

I draw the layer of red cabbage on my sketchbook. I forget leaving this cabbage outside for a week. It's completely dry seem like there's no fluid inside. When I start to draw it I think How would it look If I use it as a Lino print. I dip it into the ink.
Red cabbage print
22/03/2020
After a Lino print. I feel like I want to add some movement to my project. Lino ink to be seen to be too much solid. Which is lead me to play with an ink. It's transparent giving an effect that I want. It also makes me curious about how would it be if I developed further on photoshop. Which I think It would be a great combination way of working which I enjoy doing too. Keeping the print idea but done it digitally.
ink experiment
fabric smoking
I use the heat to create my feet texture, Unfortunately, I work on a dark colour fabric which it creates smoke, I am afraid of burning it. Black fabric won't allow me to create more wrinkle on it. I moved on to a white fabric so it wouldn't burn. White fabric doesn't give me any texture and it leaves a brownish colour on the fabric too.

choice of colour
My choice of colour couldn't be that wide. It's challenging me in a way of using the colour that goes with the project and also could form a texture I expected it to. I try to use the polyester which is the same kind of the black one above. The yellow stands out for me because it a colour of happiness to me beside Black. It's turned out to be working well than black. Also, It forms a nice texture and could be on any kind of surface for me.

texture swatch
28/03/2020
24/04/2020
An example of the swatch but the aim I want to create at least 30 pieces of swatches, the thing is I create a new design in a photoshop. What about the previous work I've been making?
choice 1: leave it alone, focus on the new pieces.
choice 2; print in one the textured fabric that I've made (hard, expensive) maybe don't have enough time.
choice3; project the work on the fabric.
choice4: make a small exhibition in the flat.
30/04/2020
I've been finishing the swatches( please find it on digital outcome page). My goal is at least 30pieces. It's turn out to be 46pieces. which is great because of it higher than what I expected. I found myself having so much fun working digitally. Maybe I had come in the right way.
an exhibition from home
1/5/2020
This is what I am planning to do if we don't have the pandemic right now. Using a projector to project my work and people could enjoy choosing a different 46 pieces of textile I've been made by themself. It's a good opportunity to have some connection with the audience. Due to the circumstances, we faced at the moment made me set up an exhibition from home and take a picture of myself. It's quite hard to do it alone because I have to set up a time to take a picture and run to the setting.
exhibition of my dream

I am happy with the result of this project. I had so much fun, hard time through this. As it's meet my expectations I sadly wish people could see and having fun with this project. I got to stick with my way of working which is photoshop which I stop using it in the middle of the term because I thought it would be weird. The peers work are mostly handmade so I quit working the way I used to. At least I know I enjoy using Photoshop involved and futuristic vibe on my work.
